Medical Privacy/H.J. Res. 38 Petition

June 18, 2001

Dear liberty activist,

Thank you to the 8,898 of you who signed our petition during a 10-day period
asking Speaker Dennis Hastert to schedule a floor vote on H.J. Res. 38 by
June 15, 2001.  (H.J. Res. 38 would repeal the so-called final federal
medical privacy rule.)  Thank you also to the unknown number of you who
telephoned Speaker Hastert's office.  We don't know the exact number of
calls the Speaker's office received, but one of our contacts on Capitol Hill
told me there were so many that Hastert's office had to devote the
equivalent of one full-time staff member to handle them all.

During this time, we also picked up our 13th cosponsor for H.J. Res. 38,
Representative Cynthia A. McKinney (Georgia).  This is important, because
while we are disappointed that Speaker Hastert did not schedule H.J. Res. 38
for a floor vote, we do not confuse disappointment with surrender.  We are
now putting in place our next move and every cosponsor of H.J. Res. 38 today
is a potential ally in tomorrow's battle.

Dr. Ron Paul who sponsored H.J. Res. 38 issued a statement today.  You can
